Culture of Pakistan

Pakistani culture and traditions are a beautiful fusion of Islamic, Persian and Indian culture. People of Pakistan follow Islamic principles in their customs, and traditions in everyday life. Pakistan has four provinces, areas of Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir that comprise varied ethnic and linguistic groups.

Pakistani culture and traditions comprise of the lifestyle, language, clothing, food, festivals, marriages, and the behaviour at the matters of joy and sorrow.  If you want to tell or write to your foreigner friend about traditions of Pakistan, then here are

Some of the common traditions of Pakistan are:

  • The family system is very strong in Pakistan. The man is the head of the household and a breadwinner. Women are responsible for all house chores, cooking and caring for children. However, it is common practice to have a part-time house- maid to help with household chores.
  •  The joint family system is preferred in Pakistan. Pakistani people respect their parents and include them in all family decisions. Giving regular expenses to older parents is also a beautiful custom of Pakistan.
  • People spent recklessly on marriages. There are many wasteful customs and showmanship on Pakistani marriages that are mainly a burden on bride's family. Giving dowry is a tradition in Pakistan. There are three main functions of Pakistani weddings: Mehndi, Nikkah and Walima. Mehndi is celebrated one day before the main function. Nikkah is an Islamic ritual which is an Islamic agreement of wedding which is the main function. Walima is a reception from the groom side, next day of Rukhsati following the sunnah.
  • Pakistani people help each other in the time of need. There is a tradition of calling jirgas (a local committee comprising influential persons of the town) to solve the people’s issue on ground.


  • Pakistani people are very cordial, social and hospitable. Guests are served with tea, cold-drink, or lal sharbat accompanying variety of snack-like eatables; Samosa, Pakora, Biscuits, Fries, Chicken bites, and Cake-Pieces as a starter is common in Pakistan. The guests are then served with a main course meal comprising Biryani, Qorma, Kabab, Roasted meat, Kabab, Roti, Nan, Salad following the last course of sweet dishes.  
  •  Pakistani people celebrate two main Islamic festivals Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha with great enthusiasm and a religious spirit. Pakistani women wear bangles and apply mehndi on hands at the occasion of Eid and a wedding as a tradition. The old members of family give Eidi(eid-money) to children.

  • A Pakistani bride wears a red dress with heavy gold jewelry on her big day. Pakistani groom mostly wear shalwar kameez with sherwani.

  • Traditionally, women wear full sleeves, small neck-line and knee length kameez with a big scarf called dupatta or chadar and narrow bottom trousers called shalwar. Men wear shalwar kameez with waist-coat and traditional pagri or caps in Pakistan.
  • Pakistani people mostly like dishes of meat; beef, mutton, fish and chicken cooked in rich oil and spices. The popular dishes of Pakistan are Biryani, mutton korma, pulao, chicken karahi, Haleem, nihari, saag and freshly cooked wheat roti. 
  • Pakistani people paint the public transport like trucks, buses and rickshaws with colourful rich patterns. You can also find quotes and advises written on local transport in Pakistan. Pakistani "Truck Art" is world famous now.
