NOVEL: AN UNWANTED FLIGHT
Ep# 4
Above Tian Shan
Siberian crane chased the hawk for long above Tian Shan
to mighty Himalayas. The hawk was glancing for safe hide out to feast its prey
when Siberian crane hit it hard from back. Hawk couldn’t keep its balance following
a crucial fight of at least 15 minutes against a furious fowl. It rolled down
and flew away but meanwhile Houbara was successful to get himself out of hawk’s
bristly claws.
‘Are you all right,’ Siberian crane held Houbara Bustard whooping
with pain and terror.
‘I think I’m. Where are we?’ Houbara felt pain jerk in
its neck but managed to get up.
They were down from 20,000 feet to at least 3000 feet
above ground among the dark green bushes and coniferous trees. They could
easily hear the buzzing of vehicles from a nearby valley.

‘Luckily, we’ve lost our way. Ah, our dream to reach from Lake Baikal to Lake
Poyang to meet our flocks…or family seemed to bury under Karakorum rifts,’
crane was tired and disappointed after brawling with a hawk.
‘Thanks for saving my life and I’m sorry too of being
rude,’ Houbara sat closer.
‘We’ll definitely meet our flyway again. Bird’s
navigation system is more strong than human’s GPRS system,’ Houbara tried to
smile and looked at the half moon peeping through the darkening blue curtain,
where the sun was about to set and stars were getting ready for work.
They both passed
that evening in high dense forest. Soon it was dark all around. The life at
valley slept in rocky lap and the noise of horns was almost dead. They both came
to road to get an idea that where that hawk chucked them.
‘Kazikastan,’ a neon sign shocked them for a while.
‘Oh my…that hawk dragged us towards west near Caspian sea
in minutes,’ Houbara flipped nervous.
‘What! I don’t like to spend my winters with western
cranes at Iran. I would rather like to die with cold over here. I’m an eastern
crane of Lake Baikal and my destiny is only Lake Poyang,’
‘It’ll be too far and dangerous to cross Karakorum, Himalayas
and Tian Sian ranges to reach Lake Poyang from western Siberia. Hawks, weather
uncertainties….If we really want to see our families again then wise to
sacrifice their company for this winter,’ Houbara bastard murmured.
‘Look, Houbara…I know you’re right but if start again at
120km/h at altitude of 30,000 feet without rest then we can reach lake Poyang in
5 days. I mean…we can think on any plan….may we find any company…any missing
flocks of birds…,’ crane was quaking in the boots.
‘I’m going mad. I’m telling you…I’m not able to think
anything. Do you remember once we spent our winters at Caspian, when there was
drought on Lake Poyang? It doesn’t matter migratory birds keep on changing
their habitats china, Iran, Pakistan… May our families turn up here?’ The thought
of hawk’s sudden attack were still scaring Houbara out of wits.
‘I know the best way of decision while nervous…,’ crane
held scared Houbara, who was fully attentive to him now.
‘Sleep at once and give time to odds,’
‘Just shut up,’ Houbara was not expecting such non serious
suggestion but he too followed crane’s snoring in minutes. The October night at
Kazakhstan was getting too cold for those warm blooded fowls. Siberian crane
wished to infiltrate in warm quilt or fur coat of any human.
‘China…Iran…China…Iran….,’ the uninterrupted uttering
while sleeping was depicting Houbara’s restless forty winks.
God knows from where an
injured baby Black-crowned night heron fell right at Houbara with bug after
breaching trees and bushes near dawn….TO BE CONTINUED
