Why December and winters are more depressed and SAD? December-A month of poets-fusionstories

Why December and winters are more sad, more depressed and more obsessed even with no apparent cause of feeling gloomy?
People adore recalling their past days and urge to look at their old buddies and relatives in December. Most people start to writing poetry as we observe many poems and songs are written to show the deep dense feelings which are especially attached to December mood.

"In kitabon may ji nhi lgta
hum ko sajni ki yaad ai hai
bheega bheega December hai"

(These books bother me now. I'm just remembering my loved one. This moist December and my soaked loneliness).

A warm cup of coffee/tea, moist in the air, blurred fog and light music takes anyone back to free of worry and full of love college/university days every December. People want to remain lonely, want to speak less and feel less energetic as soon as the days start to become shorter and colder. The change of outside weather effect the inside body moods of Humans. It looks that when the sun hides its face behind fog and snow then humans wan to mask their mood too. "Holiday blues" is another term used to describe depression in holidays.

Do you know what "SAD" is?

SAD is an abbreviation of “seasonal affective disorder” and it is a sub-category of major depressive disorders. SAD occurs when important brain chemical Serotonin and melatonin lowered down following the bad mood in December and winters. The symptoms of SAD become visible in winter/December and vanished with the first blossom of spring mostly.

DO SADNESS IN DECEMBER/WINTER ATTRIBUTED TO SUNLIGHT?

A big YES! Sun is life for living beings on earth. Have you observed your daily routine charges with sunlight? We wake up fatigued early morning but get energized by reaching our office. The day continues full of hustle-bustle as Mr. Sun is there with its solar energy to charge our batteries.  As the sun starts to lower down then our energies follow it. In modern days artificial lights replace the sun’s work in the evening otherwise in older times people used to sleep as soon as the sunset. Sunlight increases the release of a hormone called serotonin which controls your moods. When this chemical is unable to produce enough then it led to a depressive mood.

WHO EFFECT MORE OF DEPRESSION IN WINTER/DECEMBER

Sunlight is considered the best therapy to improve mental health. The people who live more indoors from working in enclosed offices without any window sometimes to stay in an inside room of big house fall more to December depression. Second, the people who are less social and follow routine activities feel fatigued in December. Few of our brain chemicals change their concentration when there is not sufficient sunlight.

HOW CAN WE REDUCE DECEMBER DEPRESSION?

  • Light therapy
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and depressed in December then light therapy will best soothe your nerves. Sitting in front of any device that is giving out light for 1-2 hours will relax your mood. It can be a TV or a side table lamp that will work.
  • Go outside
Many people find it hard to go out in cold once they come back from work. They try to pass weekends staying at homes in the cozy bed recalling the old days but going out, taking a sharp walk, sitting in any park and observe the scenic beauty can cheer your mood up.
  • Write a diary
Writing is another effective tool to lessen any depressive feelings. Write whatever you feel like. You may also write poetry and a long fiction story.
  • Social gathering
Calling your family at home or joining the party can boost the energies and reduce the December depression.
