The content writing industry has boomed in recent years in Pakistan and became an earning source for many. Despite professional content writers and hirers, there is not any set wage plan for content writers and beginners seem puzzled about the reasonable charges they should ask for their work.

Here we conducted a survey and asked experienced content writers, bloggers, and freelancers about their experiences in the field, their charges, and source of work in Pakistan. We received varied responses and got useful information that we’re sharing with you. It’ll go to benefit you in your content writing journey.

Contrnt writer salary in Pakistan

Mahnoor Ayaz is a housewife, mother of three who does content writing tasks from home for Pakistani and international clients. She told that,

‘It depends upon the research. If you're doing a rewriting sort of job, the price is less. If you're researching with like the competitive site, prices should be more.

More, if you're writing for a full-on SEO optimized post then ask for high rates. I usually charge Rs 0.8 to Rs 2 for my work depending on the nature of the article.

It also depends upon the experience level. I always set realistic goals for my content writing projects and don’t hesitate to negotiate on charges. Sometimes you don’t have options to opt but I never worked on very few charges. I feel it’s an abuse of my writing skills and valuable time I’m offering.’

‘How do you get content writing, freelancing work other than fivver or Up work?’

‘From my LinkedIn profile. I’ve got a strong LinkedIn profile where I keep on adding my writing projects. I applied for many projects through LinkedIn, sent them my content writing drafts, and got projects.’

Talha Zubair is an entrepreneur and a content writer shared his experience,

‘It totally depends on the client and work type. I normally charge 1.5 or 2 Rs per word if the client directly approaches me but when I was working as a Home-based writer for a company, they were paying me 1 rupee per word.’

‘How you come to decide this price if I may ask,’

‘The rationale part is my experience, SEO & keyword knowledge develops my rate. A client agrees to the rate after seeing the competent work I bet.

Few clients were already paying me Rs 1.5 and Rs 2 per word depending on the urgency and nature of the work. So when someone asks me I say 2rs per word.

It’s better to send the first draft and then decide the rate with the client. This way it's easier for them to decide if the quality of my work justifies the rate you’re quoting.

A website was paying me 10$ per article 500 to 600 words and 15$ for s featured article for my researched based articles.

Depends on what you're writing, for whom, and what your experience is. I've been writing for 5+ years. I have job experience in the corporate & NGO sector. My writing is more strategic. I'm writing brand stories for $290 for 1000 words because I just started Fiverr again.  Most clients are international but I also have worked with Pakistani clients for Rs 1.5 per word.

‘Do Pakistani clients pay well for content writing projects?’ we asked Shabana Ilyas who is a content writer for many websites and blogs.

‘I haven't been writing for a while now but a year back I was charging Rs 1.5 to 2 per word. Yes, Pakistani clients do pay well; I've only worked with Pakistani clients.’

‘It just seems like if anyone wants to make content writing a day job, it wouldn’t be possible to run a household with it?’ we continued our queries.

‘Unfortunately yes, if a third party is involved. If you deal directly with the client you might earn enough. I was earning 30k to 40k back then per month which could have easily been around 90 k if I pushed it. I used to write around 1500 to 2000 words daily and mostly had weekends off to myself. Depends on how much you can take, it does get exhausting.

The lowest I have ever charged is Rs 1 per word. Then I stopped writing for a while but recently did a project for Rs 3 per word.

I always worked with Pakistani clients. I haven’t worked on Fiverr or Upwork, though I’m sure it would pay better.’ Shabana amazed us with her content writing earning goals.

‘Ok, you have charged Rs 3 for any content writing or article? This means a 1000 word SEO optimized article, you’re going to get Rs 3000? Still don’t you think that Upwork is better to work with?’

‘Upwork or Fiverr demands a lot of work and commitment. Other than writing, searching for projects, bidding, gigs, etc, it seems heck to me.’

‘Then how you managed to get content writing work only from Pakistani clients?

‘Most of my projects are through referrals. I’m a part of many referral programs. Asides with experience and social network presence helped me to get more work directly from Pakistani clients. If you’re professional then it’s easy to pave your way in content writing.’

Huma Rana seemed dissatisfied with the content writer salaries and charges in Pakistan.

‘I am having a reasonable price now after 5 years of writing. Pehle to aese choona buht lagaya hai logo ne k aapko experience milega. I had worked with a lady and she paid me almost 1500 for 5 articles. Every article must contain words up to 800 with prescribed keywords.

Us k baad bhi ye k aap ney within Kun capital Mai likha hai, edit Karen aur wapis send karain kind of harken. I was annoyed.

I did a lot of work with Pakistani and international clients. The Pakistani freelancing or content writing market is disappointing for me. Its local hirers, international freelancing platforms, or individual clients, try to underpay and undervalue your content writing or copyrighting services. Recently I was offered a work like:

"Write a detail-oriented, well researched, long-form article of 3000 words, 24-hour deadline, 6 days a week."

Payment: 𝐑𝐬. 𝟎.𝟒/𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝, don’t you think it’s insane but it’ll not stop until content writers continue to work for peanuts. Many people work for free just to gain experience and that is the point where local and international hirers exploit them for dirt cheap rates.

Content writers and freelancers should understand that they’re not selling their time but their skills. They have all right to ask for reasonable charges.’

Ali is a member of many freelancing based Facebook groups where he shared gig and his work off and on. A client approached him from the messenger. He wanted him to translate news for him into good English but as he had never done any work related to translation before. So he didn't know what should he charge him?’

He asked for Rs 0.5 Rs for 1 word at least. Then the client told him that article writing requires research but here you only have to translate so charge lesser.

So, how much should he charge him per article of translation?’ we asked experienced content writers.

“I am a writer and even SEO rate for average quality content is somewhere around 0.6 per word. He needs to ask him the quantity of work, approximate pages, or words and then give him a bulk rate.

The translation is harder than writing in a language from scratch. The rate he quoted is also already quite low. I say if he doesn't want to pay it then he can go elsewhere!’

‘It may be you should keep a word range like 300 to 500 words and then charge per article for Rs 400. For ghostwriting, always charge Rs. 1 per word. If you are getting name credits, then you can work for lower.’

‘Writing, translating, copyrighting requires too much skill and hassle, don’t devalue yourself.’

‘What should content writers do to improve their worth?’ we asked.

  • The content writing market is being more strategic now and has pooled a lot of competition. To prove your worth, a content writer must work on:
  • Professional reading and writing skills keeping in mind the flow, readability, and sentence variety
  • Work on grammar and vocabulary
  • An understanding of search engine optimization SEO and keyword research
  • A content writer should be hardworking, goal-oriented with a tireless positive attitude.

Here we’ve concluded our survey:

What factors you should consider when you are offered writing or freelancing work?

  1. Charge per hour or article for a researched-based article. It should be a minimum of Rs 1000- Rs 1500 per article if you’re writing an SEO optimized article of length 1000 words.
  2. Use Emails for chats as they can be used as legal proof in case of spam.
  3. A minimum per word charges are Rs 1 for now in Pakistan for simple article writing without much SEO knowledge. So, don’t bargain less than Rs 0.8 even if you’re not experienced.
  4. If someone is asking a work in a short period then charge high.
  5.      Ask for half or partial payment in advance. Easy paisa or JazzCash is the best option to get money conveniently from clients.
  6.     If an employer insists to give final payment at the end then submit a part of the work for approval. Never deliver work before releasing of final payment.
  7. Most importantly, value your skill and don’t sell it short. Charge your dues with confidence. It’s your right.
  8.     Keep on learning keywords, SEO, competent content, and the overall structure flow of what you are trying to write.
