SUMMARY

 

“The Rain” by W. H. Davies describes the disparity of opportunities for the poor and the rich in society. The poem has a symbolic meaning. It portrays the hardships of life. The poet says that rich people get more opportunities and less is passed to the poor just like the upper leaves of a tree get more rain than the lower ones. The melodious sound of rain is a hope that the deprived ones will also get a chance to meet their needs.  The poet hopes that the sun will shine to fill the darkest corners and everyone will get equal chances in society. It’ll be great to see harmony and equality in society.

There is a disparity of opportunities for the poor and the rich in society. Rich people get more opportunities and less is passed to the poor.

About the poet

 

William Henry Davies was born on 3rd July 1871 and died on 26 September 1940. He is known for the poetry that describes hardships of life and disparity in society. At age of 3, Davies's father died and his mother remarried. He was raised by his grandparents along with his elder brother and a younger sister. He went to Alexandra Road School. Davies wrote his first poem “Death” in 1885. He spent much of his life as a hobo in the United States and traveling around. On 20 March 1899, Davies lost his right foot in the train accident and the incident turned him into a professional poet. Davies married 23-year-old Helen Matilda at the age of 53. The couple had no children.
