punishment of a bunker
‘What
are you doing here? Have you bunked your classes’?
A very beautiful young girl was there. Hassan
listened about the beauty of Egyptian girls, but words were less for her
magnificent beauty. He was spell bound……
‘Don’t
you listen, what I am saying’? She looked very angry.
‘Do you know the punishment of bunkers?’
‘Yes…no…. I didn’t…. I just….,’ Hassan got
confused.
‘Now go and fetch water for all the students’.
She brought two big buckets hanging on a big piece of dowel and put on his
shoulders from the back.
‘Aaaa…,’
Hassan acted to feel the throbbing from that heavy piece of wood.
She
got irritated by his constant non serious reactions. She went inside and took
another bucket and gave in his hand, ‘now you will bring three buckets,’ she
said and went back again. He looked around. She got disappeared somewhere in
the lobbies. The spell was over. He was alone in the backyard with three big
empty buckets and with a blazing sun on his head.
‘Which way to go?’ At last he came out in the
street. There was a big market at some distance. People were buying things of
their daily use. Hassan could see the prosperity and harmony on their faces. 11th
century witnessed the golden age of Muslims while Europeans were struggling in
their dark age.
where is the water?
‘Where could I get water’
Hassan asked a man passing there. Many people on street turned to him amazingly
on his inquiry.
‘Have I asked something
wrong?’ he thought.
‘Nile is 1KM from here,
strange! Even a new comer in Egypt knows, where to get water’, that man
commented.
‘Cairo, Oh yes, I am in Egypt,’ He heard many
stories about fast and furious Nile which was life of those people in a big
desert of Africa.
But then he estimated the
distance and cried, ‘What, 1 km? It’s
too far. How I will hold these buckets, they are very heavy even empty ’, he
talked to himself and moved forward.
After a short distance he could see many people going to river for water
and fishing. Some were riding on camels but mostly were going on foot. There
were green crops at both sides. He was
so tired, that he sat in the way.
‘I can’t even take a step
now’.
‘Are you a scholar from Al
Azhar madrassa,’ one man on a camel stopped by him.
‘Women administrators of madrassa are very
strict, I also got many punishments here,’ he told Hassan.
‘woman! She was quite
young,’ Hassan thought on his comment. Hassan sat on his camel with his
buckets.
‘I also came here from Syria
for higher studies in Mathematics like many other students from all over the
world. I have very good memories from here,’ that man was lost in his memories.
‘You can ask me in any
problem,’ Hassan got happy to see the blue waters of Nile in front of him. That
man greeted him pleasantly and went to his way. Hassan looked around the banks
of river were crowded with people. Many boats were there to transport people
and goods. Birds were flying on blue waters of Nile and catching fishes.
Hassan drank a lot of water,
filled the buckets and realized that they were too heavy to lift now even for a
minute. He saw many men and women were taking heavy buckets on foot.

‘You are too young. You
should take my buckets too,’ one man with a single bucket replied, when he
asked for help. He hardly lifted them, took one step and stopped and decided
not to bunk his class in life again. Suddenly he felt his feet on something
soft. He looked down; it was a big snake on the muddy bank of Nile. ‘Aa
aa… Anaconda in my feet’ he closed his
eyes and screamed at full volume……….
