Ayubi, A GREAT & GENEROUS MUSLIM WARRIOR
Salahuddin Ayubi's real name was
Yusuf. His father's name was Najmuddin Ayub. That is why he is called Ayubi.
His father was employed by Emad-ud-Din Zangi, the ruler of Mosul. Salahuddin
Ayubi was a Kurd by descent. He was the first sultan of Egypt and Syria and
founded the Ayyubid Empire.
Sultan Salahuddin
led a Muslim military campaign against the Crusaders in Levant and won Jerusalem, that is what he is
famous for and regarded as a great hero in the Muslim world. His empire
extended to Egypt, Syria, the islands (Upper Mesopotamia), the Hijaz (western
Arabia), Yemen, parts of western North Africa and Nubia. Under Salahuddin's
command, The Crusaders were defeated in battle, and then Palestine, including
the city of Jerusalem, was taken over by the Crusaders, who conquered the area
90 years ago.
Although
the Crusades of Jerusalem lasted until the end of the 13th century, its defeat
at Hutton caused a dispute with the Muslim powers in the region. Salahuddin
gave most of his personal wealth to his subjects.
He was a very intelligent,
fearless and pious man. He was a famous mujahid of Islam and a great warrior. He
was the first Muslim ruler to conquer Jerusalem by defeating the Christians of
Europe, thus ninety years later Bait-Al-Muqaddas was recaptured by the Muslims.
Salahuddin Ayubi lived a simple life
even after he became the Sultan. He was a man of courage and humility. He liked
to ride on the horse back than sitting on the throne. He preferred to stay in a
tent.
Salahudin
liked sitting with soldiers, generals than to spend time with vaziers.
Qazi Ibn e Shaddad, an eminent
historian of the time, wrote about Salahudin:
'Saladin had a strong heart. He was
brave, courageous and very steadfast person. He led the big military campaigns
that no trouble could afraid. He did not care about fierce competition with the
Christians. He fought and defeated a large army with a small army. In fact, a
large number of the enemy encouraged him and created enthusiasm to fight back
in him.
Virtues of Salahuddin Ayubi
Generous, benevolent, forgiving
He established many anchorages,
madrassas and hospitals for the poor and needy in his kingdom. As his kingdom
developed so his generosity increased. At the time of his death, he had only
forty-seven dirhams in his treasury. He did not own any garden, house, mansion
or land.
At the time of Bait ol Maqdas victory, One hundred and twenty thousand dinars were collected which the Christians gave as a jizya, but when Salahuddin Ayubi left there, he did not have a single dinar. He made inns, hospitals, monasteries and mosques. Some of them are present in Egypt and Syria even today.
He
took care of orphans, widows and the helpless in this way.
Salahuddin Ayubi valued the ulema
very much. He recited poetry and liked good poetry. He expressed his grief over
the death of his younger brother through poetry. Many libraries were
established in his kingdom.
Salahuddin Ayubi was very kind,
gentle and pious. He used to hear the
Quran and bursts into tears on
listening Quran.
He died in Damascus at the age of 55 in 1193.
He is buried in a shrine adjacent to the Umayyad mosque. Salahuddin Ayubi is a
prominent, proud figure in Muslim, Arab, Turkish and Kurdish history, and is
considered one of the most famous Kurds in history.
