Syed Ali Hajveri, Data Ganj Bakhsh Life, Teachings

 

 Sufis have spread the light of Islam in all corners of the world. Sufis also have a significant role in spreading the teachings of Islam and making people aware of this religion in the Indian subcontinent as well. Syed Ali Hajwary's name is prominent among these Sufis.

The Ali Hajvery real name was Ali. His father name was Usman. He was born in 1009 in Hajver, a place near Ghazni in Afghanistan that why Hajvery is written with his name.

Later, Ganj Baksh, Ali Hajveri-family left the neighborhood of Hujwiri, Ghazni and took up residence in the town of Jalab. Therefore, his name is also written with “Jalabi”. He's family was famous for their knowledge and piety. Hazrat Ali Hajvery received his early education in Ghazni. He went to Khorasan, Kerman, Iraq for further education. He traveled to Syria, Lebanon, Azerbaijan, and other places and learned from many renowned scholars. He learned the Qur'an, Hadith, and Sufism.

Hazrat Ali Hajveri came to Lahore from Ghazni in 1039 on the orders of his murshad and mentor so that the people could benefit from his blessings. At that time Lahore was ruled by the Ghaznavid dynasty. He came here with Ghaznavi son. He came to Lahore and built a mosque and a seminary here. There was a large Hindu population living here who were tired of the caste system. Inspired by his miracles, morals and character, thousands of people converted to Islam here.

The title of Ganj Bakhsh

Ganj Bakhsh means “Treasure Provider” was given due to his generous efforts for converting many towards Islam and strengthening their connection with the real benefactor Almighty Allah. Hazrat Syed Ali Hajveri, Ganj Bakhsh was given this title by the famous Sufi saint and Waliullah Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti. He came at Hajveri tomb and stayed here for some time for Chilla or communion. Thousands of people converted to Islam because of Hajvery missionary efforts and they were his loyal devotees that why he is more popular with his title “Ganj Baksh” instead of his real name.

 

Teachings of Syed Ali Hajveri

Syed Ali Hajvery was a scholar of Qur'an and the Hadith. His mother tongue was Persian. He was also fluent in Arabic. He wrote many books to promote unity among Muslims. The subject of which was Sufism. One of them is the famous book Kashf al-Mahjoob. He encouraged people to acquire knowledge. He advised patience to the poor and thanksgiving to the rich. According to Syed Ali Hajveri, a true Sufi says and does what Allah and his Messenger ordered. He follows good practices. He avoids evil, hate, jealousy, lies and greed. He urged that people should avoid counterfeit and ignorant Sufis.


About Kashaf al Mahjoob

The most famous book of Syed Ali Hajveri is Kashf al-Mahjoob. This book has revealed the true meaning of Sufism. It has refuted the misinterpretations of Sufism. It has attracted people to Sufism. Nine hundred years later, the book is still popular and worthy of imitation. The style of the book is simple, easy and clear.


Death

According to popular tradition, Syed Ali Hajveri, Ganj Bakhsh died in 1072. His shrine is in Lahore. This place is also known as Data Darbar. Every year, thousands of devotees visit here on annual Urs at Syed Ali Hajveri Tomb.

The only giver and real benefactor is Allah alone and the Sufis have preached the same. We should pray to Allah alone in every situation.
