CH# 3: THE MUGHAL ECLIPSE Rage & Mutiny of 1857 Ashoke Nath and Umer khan were young sepoys of the British Army. They joined the forces in the same year and became buddies for having the same interests in Kabadi and swimming. On that evening, Ashoke was relaxing wearing vest and dhoti (long skirt of men in India), under a shady Peepal tree at one corner of a large ground after a tough drill day at Meerut garrison. He was quieter than usual days. Ranbir Singh was busy setting up his mustaches holding a small mirror and scissors. Niaz Din and Aneel Kumar were washing their army uniforms at another corner in a muddy water channel coming from a near well. Muslim sepoys were waiting for iftar time. Everyone was thoughtful and seemed bound to its duties except the chirping birds that were free to fly and was coming back to their nests without any fret of life.
